Modeling The Truth

Who's your role model?  Mine is my dad.  My parents became Christians when I was very young.  Dad had a good job and was living the "American dream" - new house, new car, three INCREDIBLE children!  Then came the call....from God!  He was moving in my dad's heart, stirring him to go to college and become a pastor.  Talk about life change.  One thing you can count on is that God will never call you to do something easy or mildly life changing.
So my dad and mom agreed on this new course and accepted God's call.  You can just imagine what family members and friends said when my dad broke this news to them.  Many thought he was moving too fast or was entirely crazy.  But dad and mom never wavered.  He stayed the course.  God did amazing things in the years to come.  Another thing you can count on is that when you follow God's call He will do things that are humanly impossible.
There's a lot more to this story.  But the lesson that rings loudest to me is my dad's model of trust and faith in God.  He set the bar for me.  I want to be like him.
The Apostle Paul says to be "imitators of God...as beloved children" (Ephesians 5:1).  Like it or not our children are imitators.  What do you want your child to imitate?  If you model God's truth then they will follow your lead.
This month in Kids Adventure we are looking at stories that model God's truth.  Follow along with us in each edition of Homefront Weekly.  Here's the preschool and elementary editions for this week...

An Epic Battle

The crossing of the Jordan river is proof of God's power over creation.  Joshua chapter 3 spells it out clearly.  Over 30 miles of the flood swollen Jordan dried up like a heap and God sent a message to His people and all those along the river that He controls all things.  He lead them to a miraculous victory over the fortified city of Jericho.  Israel was on a spiritual high.  Then came a crushing defeat in Joshua chapter 7.  Because of the sin of one man Israel was defeated at Ai.
It is easy for us to read pieces of The Big God Story and find ourselves either frustrated with or laughing at the ignorance and foolishness of the Old Testament
people, and even Jesus’ own disciples. There are many times in Scripture when
God’s people blatantly disobeyed God in the midst of the incredible miracles He laid right in front of them. Joshua and the Israelites are a great example. They had seen God do such phenomenal work! How could they disobey God after experiencing the parting of a giant river?
Each of us is without excuse. We clutter our days with too much stuff. Even when the Israelites fell into trouble, it was because they had wrongly prioritized their lives. When they failed to approach God and listen, everything fell apart. So set aside some time this week to spend a little more time in silence with—and in awe of—God. Get away from all the noise and chaos. Find some place where you can sit and just be. Take a moment to breathe and recognize the grandeur of creation. Lay your situation down before God, then just listen.
Recognize that the same God who created everything is right there with you, and furthermore is head-over-heels in love with you. He will use what He created to give you peace and rest.

Be the spiritual champion in your child's life.  Take some time this week and help your child be prepared for church this weekend.  Use Homefront weekly to get them going!

Kids Adventure Returns This Sunday

We hope you enjoyed worshiping with your family the past two weeks.  Now it's time to get back to Kids Adventure.  Here's what's coming up this weekend...

It's REMEMBER AND CELEBRATE weekend for both Kids Safari and Kids Summit.  Each Remember and Celebrate weekend focuses on one of the seven festivals from the Old Testament.  This weekend we'll be celebrating the Festival of First Fruits.  This festival was a chance to celebrate God as the provider and to offer Him thanksgiving. First Fruits represent the celebration of the first grain harvest of the spring. One sheaf offering of grain was taken to the temple. These offerings were made the day following the Sabbath, which means it would be on Sunday. It marked the beginning of the two-month spring harvest. In the New Testament, Jesus resurrected as the first- fruit offering on Sunday, the day after Passover Sabbath.

We will tie this festival of first fruits with the Biblical principle that God is TRUSTWORTHY.  He gives us what we need and continues to bless us when we give back to Him.  We will also spend time reviewing our Big God Stories from the past six weeks (mostly having to do with the Christmas Story).

Pause this week to have your own personal moments to remember and celebrate God's goodness and all He has done through this season in your life.  Take a look at your calendar and block out a day to Sabbath.  Don't participate in anything you consider to be work.  For one day stop and do the things that fill you up.  Do only the things that will refresh and restore your soul.  Refreshment looks different for each person.  Some enjoy social gatherings, others enjoy time alone.  Do whatever it is that will allow you to connect with God.

Be sure to check back each Monday for a preview of the week ahead in Kids Adventure!
