Dealing With Tragedy
Control is something that brings us a sense of security and peace. When tragedies like the Sandy Hill shootings happen we lose that sense of security and peace.
It is impossible to comprehend the senselessness behind such a terrible act. But it is reality! That reality happened in the lives of several Connecticut families on Friday. Our children hear about this and other tragedies more often than we like. They are processing this information in their own way. How do we help them? What can we do to support them?
Here are a few links to resources that can provide counsel for parents and children who are dealing with crisis:

Love Patiently!
I've been married to my wonderful wife for 22 years. We've had our ups and downs but I can honestly say that my love for her grows with time. She has been my greatest partner in everything I do. I could never repay her gift of love for me.
I've been challenged many times in my married life to consider the extent of my love for her. How long would my love endure for my wife? Could there be a circumstance in life that would cause my love to fail? The answer can be no other than "til death do us part!" That's the commitment I've made.
I'm speaking in our adult worship services tomorrow. This will be the final message in our series "Love is a Verb." The message title is: "Love Patiently." As I began to prepare for this message I was reminded of a man I met nearly 15 years ago. His story is inspiring. He is a great example of patient love. I ask you to take five minutes and read his story.
Robertson McQuilkin loved his wife Muriel with great patience. I want to love that way. But his story also reminds me that this is exactly how God loves me! He provides for my daily needs and many times all he receives in return is a grunt and a groan. Great loving patients on display no matter what the circumstances.

Fall Happenings!
Hello Parents and Grandparents!
Our fall schedule is about to kick off at LSCC. As you are probably aware, we've made some changes to our programming. The following is a list of questions you may ask in response to the changes. Take a few minutes and read through this information. If you have any further questions, please give Alan Phillips or Kevin Hartman a call in the children's ministry office (816.524.6786).
Q: What's different about Sundays?
A: Not much will change for the early childhood area. We will have a familiar structure for ages 3-5: check into room, go to large group worship time, then back to room for small group interaction. As an addition to early childhood, we are excited to let you know that we now have a strategy and curriculum to teach our nursery babies and toddlers! As for elementary, we will have a stage-driven production that is fast paced, high energy, and Bible focused. All children in grades 1-6 will meet in the Kids Adventure auditorium located in the lower level.
Q: When do these changes go into effect?
A: Sunday, September 9th.
Q: When do these changes go into effect?
A: Sunday, September 9th.
Q: Why are we doing away with Sunday small groups for elementary children?
A: After two years of trying, we've concluded that we just don't have enough time to provide a high quality elementary small group experience on Sundays. Therefore, Sunday's focus will be to introduce children to our monthly Biblical virtue through Bible stories, Bible memory, games, skits, music and much more. See our Wednesday FAQ section for more details concerning small groups.
Q: What is the core Biblical virtue?
A: The elementary curriculum is founded on three basic truths: I need to make the wise choice; I can trust God no matter what; I should treat others the way I want to be treated. These truths are taught by learning 36 Biblical virtues as seen in 150 different Bible stories. We will focus on one virtue a month. These virtues are qualities that keep our children from being ineffective and unproductive in their knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. As we become more like Him, He'll use those qualities or virtues in us to change the world around us.
Wednesday Night:
Q: What's different about Wednesdays?
A: Wednesday night is now Adventure Quest. Adventure Quest is for children ages 3 through sixth grade and meets from 6:30 to 8 pm beginning September 5th. Each child will be a part of a small group led by an adult with the goal of developing a close relationship with God and each other. Ages 3 through kindergarten will go through a rotation of Bible story and music, and small group interaction and activities. Elementary children will be a part of a grade and gender related group led by an adult and will participate in large group and small group rotations.
Q: Where does my child go?
A: Early childhood (birth through kindergarten) will go to the same room they use on Sunday morning. All elementary children will go downstairs in the Kids Adventure auditorium.
Q: Do I have to register?
A: NO! If you are already in our church data base, you're all set. Just report to one of our computer kiosks in the children's lobby, check in and take your child to their assigned room just like you would do on Sunday morning.
Q: Is there an incentive program?
A: We will have an incentive program for all elementary children. Your child can earn points by: completing the "God Time" (personal quiet time) card, quoting assigned memory verses, bringing a friend, quoting the monthly virtue, and more. Accumulated points may be used to purchase items from the "Adventure Outpost". Join us on September 5th, for more details on how your child can participate.
Q: Does my child wear a uniform?
A: NO! There are no uniforms for Adventure Quest.
Q: Is there any cost involved?
A: NO! One of our goals is to provide a Wednesday evening discipleship program that is free and easy to enter no matter what time of year your child begins.
Q: Is this just a repeat of Sunday?
A: NO! While we will review the basic truth, Biblical value, and Bible story, we will spend a considerable amount of time in small groups developing our relationship with God and our relationship with the small group members.
The Bottom Line:
Q: How does this new programming help me be a spiritual leader at home?
A: LSCC is designing a strategy that combines the influence of the family and the faith community in order to demonstrate the message of God's story to influence the next generation. It's strategic parenting. Its a plan of action with an end in mind. We are ready to help you with a unified plan and show you how to use it.
Q: What do I do now?
A: Attend our newest class for parents: Parenting Beyond Your Capacity. This six week class will begin on September 9, and will meet at 9:30 a.m. We will show you how to use this strategy and equip you with resources to help you every day - because we know that you want to be the best parent you can be.
Gone are the days of figuring out how to parent on your own. LSCC wants to partner with you using a strategy that equips you for this journey. Let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to hearing from you.
Blessings,
Kevin Hartman and Alan Phillips

Home Sweet Home
So, it's official. Camp is in the books. We had 51 children and 18 leaders attend this year. Each day was filled with both fun and challenge. It was great to see our group grow together in their relationships, but the greatest reward had to be how our group responded to the challenge to be Survivors in Christ.
Our camp speaker, Dan Meers, challenged us from the Word to be prepared to go home and spend our life on things that matter for eternity. Our departing thought was a quote that Dan has over his desk at work that says,
If you had a child go to LSCC Kids Camp, ask your child to share their week with you. Many made life changing decisions. They are primed to begin their journey to discover God's plan for their life.
Thanks for allowing your child to attend camp. It was a blessing to be there and share the experience with them.

Life is like a coin. You can spend it any way you wish but you only get to spend it one time, so spend it wisely. Now that we're home, that challenge begins. For may of us, we dedicated our life to this pursuit. We need others to join us. Most importantly, if you are a mom or dad, we need your encouragement. We need you to set the pace. We are ready to follow your lead. Let's go!

This year's theme is: SURVIVOR. Our key verse is 1 Timothy 4:12 which says,
Keep in touch with camp happenings here. I'll have daily updates and videos on our facebook page as well (LSCC Kids Adventure).
Also, I'm super excited to announce the arrival of our new Children's Ministry Director, Alan Phillips. Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.God equips us to survive and thrive in this life for the purpose of setting an example for others to follow. Summer Stuff
If you're like me, "summer" doesn't mean "slow down". Two of our greatest events we do at LSCC happen during each summer. So, as we get into the swing of summer there are a few things that will be helpful for our LSCC families to know.
VBS is happening June 18-21, from 9am to noon each day, and is for children ENTERING grades 1-6 next fall. Our theme is SKY, "Everything is possible with God." (Mark 10:27) LSCC will be transformed into a runway of excitement and challenge. We will have a special Sunday morning VBS launch on June 17, at both of our morning services. You will NOT want to miss this service! So, what are you waiting for? Register now.
Click HERE to register your child for VBS at LSCC.
That's not all! Right after VBS is done, we will make our final preparations for Kids Adventure Camp. Camp is at Windermere Conference Center in Roach, Mo. on the Lake of the Ozarks, July 12-16, and is for children ENTERING grades 4-6 this fall. Cost is $325 if registered on or before June 17; $350 after June 17. KA Camp is a highly relational, deeply Bible-centered event. Our goal is to grow together with God and each other. If you have any questions regarding camp please contact our Children's Ministry office at 816-251-3406.

The "Kid" Table
Ever sit at the kid's table? Every time I think of the kid table I think of Thanksgiving. We spent many years going to my uncle's house and celebrating turkey day with them. My cousins and I were close in age. We had some serious fun at the kid table doing things that confirmed our parent's reason for establishing such a place. But the most fun I ever had at the kid table was the year my grandmother decided she would join US at the kid table for Thanksgiving dinner. We never laughed so hard in our lives. At times we wondered if grandma Hartman would even make it through alive. She had more fun than any of us.
Sunday is Family Worship day at LSCC. Everyone first grade and up will join together in the main auditorium for worship. We will talk about the kid table and the adult table. You'll have to come and join us to find out the rest. I promise it will be a great time for your entire family.

Your Questions .1
For those who weren't at LSCC this past Sunday, we began a new series called "The Family Room" - six weeks of focus on family issues. I had the privilege of delivering Sunday's message entitled "Game Changers". We are called to be game changers in our children's lives.
One feature of this series is the opportunity we give to text questions about the message during the service. We spend a few minutes at the end answering some of those questions. Since we ran out of time to answer all of the questions, I promised to blog about the unanswered ones. So, here's your first installment of Q & A.
Question: What's the greatest game changer of all time?
Answer: I'll not begin an unending debate on the greatest sports game changer of all time. Too messy. I gave a few of my favorites in my message. I'll go straight to history.
I'm not sure how one could debate that anyone but Jesus Christ was the greatest game changer of all time. He's the only one who can say that the calendar is based on His birthday! All of history literally revolves around His life. He's also the only one who can say that He is God and proved it! He fulfilled over 300 prophecies, most of which were completely beyond human control (i.e. birth place, manner of death, people's response, etc.). More importantly for me, He has proven Himself to be the greatest game changer in my life. I could fill many blogs with stories of how He has changed for the better and changed me forever. He truly is "the way, the truth and the life."
Question: How do I stay positive about my relationship with my in-laws when I disagree with parts of their lifestyle?

Question: How do I stay positive about my relationship with my in-laws when I disagree with parts of their lifestyle?
Answer: Three thoughts. First, pray. James 5:16 says, "The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much." Don't cease praying for them. Notice that the effectiveness of prayer is dependent upon a righteous lifestyle. Your life speaks more loudly than your words. If you love them as described in 1 Corinthians 13, then you will be more likely to see them change.
Second, Jesus said Himself that He didn't "come to bring peace, but a sword." (Matthew 10:34) That's strong language for the God of Peace! What did He mean? Simply this. Those who choose to follow Jesus will pay a price. Jesus goes on to say that if we place a greater importance on our human relationships than with God, we aren't worthy of Him! We cannot expect to experience God's blessings when we compromise the teaching of His word to appease people.
Finally, talk this over with your spouse. God called you together as "one flesh". Therefore, you must act as a unit. Pray together. Think of ways you can display love while not compromising your core beliefs.
That's it for this edition. More to come tomorrow!

....as in, the number of hours in the week. It's the number of hours this week that I have to be a game changer.
Parents must be real. They must model faith before their children. They must raise the standard and settle for nothing less that a complete passion for God. They must parent beyond their capacity using the influence of the faith community as a resource.
Begin by creating a rhythm that gives opportunities to talk about your child about spiritual things. Make a simple first step. Schedule one day this week to sit down together with your family and spend some time in the Bible. We have a perfect tool to help. It's called HomeFront.
The weekly edition is designed to help you preview the Bible story we will teach preschoolers, kindergarteners and elementary children next Sunday, giving you the primary teaching role and LSCC the supporting role.
Click HERE for HomeFront weekly for Preschool and Kindergarten.
Click HERE for HomeFront weekly for Elementary.
Click HERE for HomeFront monthly; a publication that offers games, recipes, storytelling, activities, and more for you and your family.
By the way, if you do HomeFront weekly with your preschool, kindergarten or elementary child for the next six weeks, and bring your signed copies of HF weekly to church on June 17, we will give your child a gift!
No one should parent alone. Use your faith community as a tool box of support. Have a balanced approach understanding that no one has more influence on your child than YOU! How can LSCC help? Let us know. Go to lscckc.org. We are here to support you in your parenting journey.

New HomeFront Monthly
Kids Adventure is moving on to our next environment - Identity. By the way, did you know that we will go through ten different environments throughout the year? Each HomeFront monthly is designed around one environment. We usually spend about four weeks in each environment.
The idea of "environments" may be a bit confusing to you. Let me explain. Faith is supernatural. I am not capable of creating it in another person. If I try to impose my faith on my child, she will become resistant and maybe even rebellious. But, as I put my child in close proximity to God she will see Him and be more likely to want to have her own relationship with Him. So, what's my job? I am to cultivate environments that help my children's faith grow, teaching them how to cultivate a love relationship with Jesus as I cultivate my own. When we live our lives authentically before our children, they will see our transformation and follow in our ways.
HomeFront Monthly is a publication that gives you ideas on how to cultivate these environments. Open it up, choose what works for you, and go to it.

Also, help prepare your child for what is coming up this weekend at Kids Adventure.

Orange, Day 3
We heard from Andy Stanley this morning. Andy is a strategic leader. Leadership oozes from him. His messages are usually quite simple but most profound.
His big idea was this: Healthy, productive cultures are characterized by MUTUAL SUBMISSION!
This isn't limited to the professional sector. It also works in the home. Think about it this way. If I, as a husband and father, model a behavior that says, "You're here to serve me!" my children will resent my leadership and rebel. But if I model a behavior that says, "I'm here to help you succeed regardless of your position in this family," then my children are much more likely to accept my guidance and follow my lead.
Jesus led his disciples this way. He told them: For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Mark 10:45)
Mutual submission asks the question: How can I help? This is a game changer. (We'll talk about more game changers on Mother's day at LSCC in our main services.) When you ask this question often enough you'll get answers. Be patient. If it's not a part of your family culture it may take some persistence to get an answer (let the initial shock of hearing the question wear off).
When you begin to see acts of submission, reward them. When you do you are reinforcing this behavior. Remember, what gets rewarded gets repeated.
Orange, Day 2
Thursday morning we heard from Craig Groeschel, founding pastor of LifeChurch.tv. He asked the question: "What would define success for the next generation?" Here's a summary of his message....
For the most part, our culture says success is raising well-rounded, well-educated, happy kids; kids who experience several different activities and educational experiences and grow up enjoying life. Sounds good, but consider this....
Jesus asked: "What good is it if a person gains the world but forfeits his soul?" (Matthew 16:26)
Gut check time. God didn't call us to be happy! God didn't call us to be super educated. Nor did God call us to be culturally well-rounded. There is nothing wrong with these things, but they don't fill the commission that God has given to parents. Instead....
God calls us to unleash single-minded, Christ-centered, Biblically anchored world changers - kids who know God's Word, proclaim it to others, and are able to defend their faith.
You might want to read that again.
Christianity isn't something we do. It's who we are! We're going to unpack this on Mother's day, May 13, 2012, at LSCC. We will begin a special six week series focusing on the family, finishing on June 17, with a special VBS kick off Sunday that is one you won't want to miss.
So, take a deep breath, pick yourself up off of the floor and pray. Pray that God will fuel the passion you have to be the best parent you can be, then resolve to create rhythms in your personal and family life that help your children grow a passionate, lasting relationship with God.
