How Old is Old Enough?

I'm finishing my twentieth year of ministry.  Over that time I've been asked a lot of questions.  Without a doubt, the question that is asked the most is:  "How old should my child be to understand she needs to be saved from her sin?"

I have four daughters.  They are 16, 14, 11 and 6 months.  The three older ones have given their heart to God.  They've realized that their sin separated them from God and they need His forgiveness.  One of them was only four when she accepted Jesus as Savior.  Some would say that's too young.  I say the Gospel is a simple message.  We learn early in life that there is right and wrong.  When my daughters understood the parallel between wrong and sin and understood that Jesus died for their sin they wanted His forgiveness.

Read this week's HomeFront for preschool and kindergarten.  It is our responsibility to model a passionate relationship with God.  We must teach our children who Jesus is.  We must be ready to take the opportunities we are given to help our children experience Him in their every-day lives.

I'm a firm believer that I will know when my child is ready to accept Jesus (they told me they were!).  This has been true with our first three children and I believe it will be true with our fourth one.  So, don't ask "How old is old enough?"  Instead, ask "Does my child see Jesus in me?"

As we approach Easter ask God to give you opportunities to share Jesus' love with your children and others.  BE READY!  He will answer your prayer.
